Fair Trash Fair at Capilano U

A couple of weeks ago was the Fair Trash Fair at Capilano University. The event was organized by the Sustainability team at the University... Awesome student workers led by Bill Demopoulos. The Waste Audit was to be happening that day but the snow made it so the audit had to be postponed. Going through garbage in the cold just didn't seem that fun!

The Fair Trash Fair was a blast! I manned a table where we repurposed old fleece blankets. Here's my Fair Trash Fair peeps...

We had information about composting, a DIY macrame table and then my table where we turned the blankets into easy peasy plant pouches.

My new friend - the dude from Electrorecycle. He was there to collect staff and student's electronic recyclables... Old mobile phones, appliances, etc. He even took my stash of lightbulbs. And he crafted with us! Score!

Here's my super simple plant pouch... I transplanted a baby succulent. Here's hoping it survived being uprooted!

And there you go... How could I not love my 'real' job when I get to work with so many awesome peeps, use my crafty skills and partner with the various departments in this FAB campus community.

Stay tuned for more Cap U / TBD awesomeness. This place is so darn wonderful to work at!

Wine cork characters in a jiffy

It doesn't take much to transform junk into kewl projects! You don't have to invest a lot of time, money or know how into creating upcycling magic. For my recent Family Day Crafternoon at the North Vancouver City Library, I collected 300 wine corks for participants to reimagine. We transformed them into crazy characters and creatures.

I started out with a quick sketch of my character...

Then gathered the pieces... A couple of pom poms for the hair and nose, a set of googly eyes, felt for a tie, cork for the feet and hands and a wine cork for the body.

Here's my wine cork character... Such a fun and easy DIY for kids! And my final project actually looked like my sketch!

He's one good looking dude, isn't he?

Another crafting with 'crap' win!

Upcycling awesomeness at the Family Day Crafternoon

Last month I had two awesome Crafternoons in partnership with the North Vancouver City Library. On February 13, 2017, we had a BC Family Day upcycling workshop where we upcycled wine corks into characters and creatures.

I was able to collect 300 wine corks for free if you can believe it. A bunch from friends and a couple of local businesses. I was sure we had enough for everyone! Here's a cutie patootie family of wine cork characters.

Mom and daughters crafting up a storm.

Most exuberant crafter EVER. Seriously. Best crafty partner as she was brimming with excitement and super pumped about upcycling and making awesomeness happen.

Sigh... Love my regulars. David and his sons have been crafting with me for years. I love it when they pop in, get their craft on then get out there being awesome.

Oh Jose... Another origami masterpiece happened. No Crafternoon is complete without Jose and his kick butt origami skillz.

This girl warmed my heart... She crafted, shared her cookies with other participants then kept checking in on me. I think she had fun!

Random craft awesomeness... DIY snowman made of pom poms, pipe cleaners and glue.

Yup - we used up over 200 of my 300 donated wine corks. We killed it.

Another family of wine cork peeps.

Yup... New crafters got into the Crafternoon groove. Once you join us, you get it. Crafting with 'crap' rocks!

New crafter who made craft awesomeness happen.

Mom and daughter craft date... Both kicked butt.

My regulars... Super stoked with their projects. *swoon*

More FAB crafty dates and projects.

Yup - I am one blessed gal. I get to craft with the nicest, sweetest, funnest peeps.

Thanks for another awesome Crafternoon North Vancouver City Library! We had 50 participants of all ages and skill levels kick craft butt! We upcycled over 200 wine corks into characters and creatures. So much fun! Love my crafty peeps!

TBD's next upcycling workshop at the North Vancouver City Library is a Mother's Day Crafternoon on Saturday, May 6th from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. See you there!

Valentine's Day Crafternoon

It's been awhile since I've posted to my blog. Eh gad - where has the time gone! A month ago I hosted a Valentine's Day Crafternoon with the North Vancouver City Library. What a blast! Despite the snow we ended up having 50+ participants. And all my supplies got used up... I love bringing a bunch then having very little to take home.

We upcycled cereal boxes, wooden spools, tin cans and paper samples into Valentine’s cards, reusable packaging and garlands. Here's one of my sparkly samples - a wooden spool note using cork ribbon.

Love the DIY stationary out of cereal boxes, paper samples and glittery hearts.

I brought some ribbon and stamps too.

The front of a Valentine's Day card for Dad and Mom.

And the back.

A few DIY cards in the making!

Cute inside of one of the cards.

We had new participants and of course my regulars... These guys were a great team cranking out the Valentine's Day awesomeness!

A boring tin I had at home turned into a box wrapped in love.

A couple of cards with tons of hearts.

A wrapped box and card.

My friend Sharanya dropped by the Crafternoon and made a garland out of hearts and her favourite quotes. I met Sharanya at my upcycling workshop with New Westminster Public Library last year.

One of the quotes Sharanya included.

Big thanks to North Vancouver City Library for hosting the workshop. And definitely to Vancouver Foundation and their Neighbourhood Small Grants program for getting me more involved in community building. Love my Crafternoons and my awesome crafty peeps. Yay for crafting with 'crap'!
